A radio play telling stories of days gone by
Listen below
In a heartfelt co-created process with individuals aged 60 and over from North Manchester, we embarked on a journey to capture and preserve the stories and personal experiences that make up the fabric of our community. With their rich histories, tales, anecdotes and everything in between. From grand moments to the seemingly ordinary, every anecdote holds an irreplaceable piece of the past, worthy of recognition.
This project archived authentic working-class narratives, ensuring they live on for future generations to treasure. Each story shared in our sessions were transformed into scripts, which were then brought to life through performances, recordings, and careful editing to create a series of radio play scenes. The group also made their own sound effects!
In addition to the radio play, we hosted a live listening party. It was a special event where attendees could gather, listen to the stories, and enjoy the radio play firsthand. The event was graced by special guests and local councillors, who shared in the joy of celebrating our collective history and the voices that helped shape it.
This project was inspired by Dorothy Banks, whose passion and energy left a mark on all of us. Meeting and working with Dorothy was truly a privilege, and her vibrant spirit continues to resonate through this project and beyond. Her legacy will remain a driving force behind the work we do, reminding us of the importance of capturing these voices and ensuring they are never forgotten.
